It's a metaphorical phrase.
I am a cyclist and over the years I have participated in an event held in late August in the Texas city of Wichita Falls, northwest of Fort Worth. The event is called Hotter n Hell and is an annual bicycle event that boasts the largest turnout of any pay ride around.
The phrase, oh yeah, well the event has a 100 mile ride that takes you around north central Texas and almost to Oklahoma. In that it is held in late August, the weather can have some very tough elements for a cyclist to deal with. And what is that you ask? Try riding 100 miles, and when it gets hot, say over 104 which on the road can be 114, well let's just say you better be ready for what can happen.
The 100 degrees and the 100 miles of open, shadeless roads is what separates those that can from those can't. I've been fortunate to have completed all but 2 of the 19 times I ridden this event.
This book will list some of those times and maybe, just maybe someone reading this book, will be saved from the med tent and an IV bag stuck in their arm.
It also has to do with freedom.
